What is Epoxy Primer?
Epoxy primer is a two-component undercoat/sealer that is applied before the main epoxy coating as a finisher. Most epoxy primers have been formulated to be very low viscosity, ranging between 500 to 2,000 CPS. It’s designed to penetrate and seal porous surfaces like concrete, creating a solid foundation for the topcoat. This initial layer is vital for several reasons:
Sealing: It seals the substrate, preventing bubbles and imperfections that could mar the finish. One to two coats are applied depending on the substrate porosity.
Protection: The primer acts as a protective layer, guarding against moisture and other contaminants that can compromise the integrity of the floor. As long as the substrate moisture content is manageable (below 4%), the primer can serve as a temporary moisture barrier. For moisture content above 4%, a permanent moisture barrier is strongly recommended. To understand moisture levels further, a moisture test is required.

1. Surface Preparation: This may involve grinding, shot blasting, degreasing, and acid etching to ensure optimal adhesion. The substrate must be sound and have sufficient compressive strength (minimum 25N/mm²) with a minimum tensile pull-off strength of 1.5N/mm². Additionally, the surface must be free of standing water, dirt, oil, grease, and other contaminants and thoroughly cleaned before the application of primer.
2. Mixing: The epoxy primer components are mixed according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This typically involves combining a resin and a hardener. Good adhesion is only achieved when a proper mix is obtained. To ensure this, pre-mix Part A and Part B separately for approximately one minute each before combining both. Mix thoroughly for another three minutes using a low-speed drill (300-400 rpm) and mixing paddle. During the mixing, scrape the bottom and sides of the containers at least once. Do not do so after the mixing operation has stopped, as this may result in unmixed resin or hardener being applied to the substrate. Remember that unmixed resin or hardener will not cure properly.
3. Application: The primer is applied using a roller, ensuring an even coat. It’s important to work quickly and efficiently, as epoxy primers have a limited working time. The surface and ambient temperature during application should be between 10 to 32 °C.
4. Curing: Allow the primer to cure completely before applying the topcoat. This can take anywhere from a few hours to 16 hours, depending on the product and environmental conditions. Working time and open time will decrease as the temperature increases and increase as the temperature decreases. If the primer loses tackiness or exceeds open time, do not apply the topcoat. Instead, wipe the surface clean and reapply a fresh coat of primer before proceeding. The trick is to sprinkle some quartz sand in conjunction with the application of the primer.
